So glad my manager is on vacation. I am his only subordinate and have few responsibilities so its like a vacation for me too.

Which holiday are you referring to? In Canada it was just Labor Day weekend and it was very nice to get an extra day. It afforded me to do some work and relax as well.

How stupid is the thought of moving to Japan and doing remote US work while being a self taught programmer? It's parasitic to think about but JPY becoming weak means I don't need much USD to survive. Is the competition in this kind of thing really that saturated to the point where I'll only make like 12-24k usd per year?

I wouldn't move there unless I had a bunch of savings or a job lined up. I worked remotely from Japan on two separate occasions. I would work something like 7pm to 3am. I didn't tell my manager so I just stuck to the same shift as back home. It offered me the ability to get up around 2pm and go out for several hours before needing to return. It was neat to experience, but also kind of depressing because I barely spoke to anybody there. It is way better having a set of weeks dedicated to a holiday than any sort of digital nomading or night shift work there. I did meet a few locals who spoke enough English to hang out with, but still...
It could take you years to actually get a job., it sounds like you don't have one already so get a job first and then go is my opinion
You should really be saving up a shit ton of money in your 20s. Well also going on some fun ass trips and then take your foot off the gas pedal a bit once you hit 30.

Also, sorry for being a bit condescending here. I know ever since 2024 came around finding work has been fucking brutal so just commenting passively and saying you should be saving up a shit ton of money in your 20's is kind of belittling but the point still stands, compound interest will make your future much better in terms of finances.
