>>266 Dunno if this would be a good idea or not but I've often wondered if any good can come from banning old image video codecs like H.264/GIF. Like you can't upload .xvid mpeg4 video on 4chan because it wouldn't make sense allowing users to upload super potato quality video.
Maybe it's time to start retiring H.264/GIF so people will be encouraged to start using things like AV1 and quality will go up?
>>283 You know when I started this project I wondered the same about several aspects of the website, for example I wanted everyone to sign up with a google account before they could see anything, but then I decided to make most pages public and allow anonymous posting What I'm getting into is that I believe in this day and age it's necessary to make the experience as seamless as possible to the end user. I would rather use the server to reencode older formats than prevent the end user from uploading them, shifting the burden to the website. I believe this is how most of big tech operates as well I wish everyone was on desktop and had some basic computer skills, but in 2026 most people are on their phones and have no idea what file formats even are, let alone codecs
>>285 Cool, you even preserved the transparency from that PNG. I get it now, blocking uploads would drive users away because there's always people complaining about 4chan not accepting webp uploads.
>>286 Yeah that's the idea, it can get very complicated but at the current stage of the website we encode images to the webp format. For videos we aren't encoding them because that's more compute expensive and could lead to the website slowing down if there are a lot of uploads
>>288 Dam, I knew other anons having the basic tech skills to convert png/jpg to .webp before uploading here was too good to be true lol. Testing encode quality.
>>289 >I knew other anons having the basic tech skills to convert png/jpg to .webp before uploading here was too good to be true lol Yeah I think the ideal scenario is someone uploading on an older format, then a website converts it to a new format then that new format is spread to the internet
>>291 Sounds good, you'd indirectly help other websites save bandwidth if OC content from here spreads elsewhere. Encoding multiple user H.264 video to AV1 (with good compression efficiency) in real time while not having the website go down is a pretty expensive undertaking right now, I wouldn't do it unless get your hands on a couple 192-core epyc servers or maybe 4...
Allow slurs like ngger/kke/f*ggot but only once per post and as long as it isn't full blown TND lynch mob racism. Like some kind of ying/yang balance where we can speak our minds but also not become a stormfront clone. Also auto convert "tbh" to desu and "fam" to senpai because I don't want this place to be ebonics friendly.
>>307 The thing is that in 2026 the overall political climate doesn't allow this level of free speech outside of the USA. This is why large corporations have an advantage over smaller ones and why it's so hard to compete with them, they have lawyers and legal backing to safely go beyond what smaller websites would be allowed to. Smaller website risk being deplatformed if they don't follow these rules. It's the same thing with NSFW content, governments around the world pushing for age verification only benefit the large companies that can afford it
>>310 That sucks, I'll still bookmark this place as an alternative to 4chan thoughbeit. At least you allow webp/av1 here, most social media sites convert whatever you upload to a small shit ass quality JPG/H264 video.
Like the whole internet should be on JPEG-XL by now but they're really dragging their feet with the adoption of it. Maybe consider adopting that when chrome/firefox finally add mainstream support.
>>266 Umigalaxy owner, heads up — there’s a shizo active on /g/ who repeatedly circumvents bans and reacts aggressively to any conversations about AV1. Since AV1 is allowed here, it's gonna be on his radar. I've been pondering making more /g/ AV1 threads linking to your site to get some users here. But making threads on /g/ about your AV1 paradise here risks the shizo taking residence here. What should I do?
>>508 Hey man, it's all good, no need worry about it If necessary I can activate anti spam features on the website and even code something like a cheap AI to double check posts and flag them for moderation >>509 Thanks anon, I'm happy to hear that
>>510 Magnificent, I'm a novice at windows .cmd creation but I have more AV1 encoding thread ideas like show how much filesize was saved at equal SSIM when I improve.
>>510 Void, I have recently published my new SSIM/AV1 thread but I've just noticed a small problem. In my script there are spaces to separate my loops/variables but when I posted the thread here the spaces got converted into regular spaces but this was added:
I'd appreciate it if you could fix this before I publish the thread on /g/ 4chan.
>>594 That wasn't me, I think VMAF is a better video metric than SSIM. Dunno how to write scripts yet and that's probably the only way to make optimized animated webp images. Oh well, still a lot of static webp images I can make.
I'm wondering if it's possible to stop a video playing when another one is started in a thread, just a small bug i encountered while browsing, might be a limitation depending on platform idk
Also no shade but how much of umi was made with ai? It looks good, it reads well, all perfect thank you for this @void
>>687 >I'm wondering if it's possible to stop a video playing when another one is started in a thread, just a small bug i encountered while browsing, might be a limitation depending on platform idk On imageboard that's usually the behavior, but I think I can add a toggle to the settings to make it one at a time for the users who prefer it that way >Also no shade but how much of umi was made with ai? It looks good, it reads well, all perfect thank you for this to be honest a lot of it was done with AI, it'd have been impossible for me to do something this large alone. I'm not 100% happy with it and I wish to give it a more human touch though
>On imageboard that's usually the behavior, but I think I can add a toggle to the settings to make it one at a time for the users who prefer it that way
Glad you take that feedback, it's not a big point just something I noticed and thought might not be intended
>to be honest a lot of it was done with AI, it'd have been impossible for me to do something this large alone. I'm not 100% happy with it and I wish to give it a more human touch though
Completely valid, I'm guessing you're working on this alone? Got the source anywhere or is that off limits? Some ppl here might be able to help you out a bit
>>691 >Completely valid, I'm guessing you're working on this alone? Got the source anywhere or is that off limits? Some ppl here might be able to help you out a bit It's closed source, at least for now, to be honest in this day and age coding is the easy part, actually getting people to try the website is 1000x harder. Marketing is the biggest problem because the internet traffic is concentrated on just a handful of apps like twitter, instagram, facebook etc I'd be really glad if people could help with that, just sharing the link to the website would help immensely
@void I think the quick reply box on DESKTOP should be twice as wide, a 64 char limit feels cramped, 128 feels better imho That's about half my 27 inch 1080p monitor width on notepad using consolas, size 10, regular. On mobile it seems fine though.
@void I just noticed this but I think you should sticky important threads like this in /general/ and the website feedback one in /tech/ Alternatively maybe a /meta/ board???? But yeah important stuff is getting buried under all the threads posted so far.
Also what are your plans regarding sending aging threads to the grave? I understand letting user uploads balloon forever isn't practical. X day lifespan? 300 reply lifespan? Also this is a long term thing but have you thought about making an umigalaxy archive?
>>1145 Great idea, here is the https://umigalaxy.com/explore/meta board >Also what are your plans regarding sending aging threads to the grave? I understand letting user uploads balloon forever isn't practical. >X day lifespan? 300 reply lifespan? Also this is a long term thing but have you thought about making an umigalaxy archive? Right now we follow the same 10 page system that 4chan uses, after a thread leaves the 10th thread, it gets deleted About an archive, I never really thought about it. I've heard they cost quite a lot of money to run, but maybe a thread exporter functionality would be nice
>>1148 Seems reasonable. And yeah all the 4chan archives seem to be struggling tbh, desu started nuking stuff before 2020 and most /wsg/ content. Storage prices might not allow you to store anything more than the text/thumbnails. I'll try to keep backing up my older images/videos on catbox. Fuck, what a double edged sword AI turned out to be. It's fun/useful but it's going to send everyone back a decade in storage capacity.
Anyway do you have a plan to deal with the frogspam and twitter screen sharts that are flooding most 4chan boards right now? I've given up trying to stop the former there with MD5 filtering as the spammers made scripts that scramble their MD5s just to annoy us.
>too much whitespace padding. This is particularly cumbersome on mobile >catalog cards aren't clickable, except for on their images. That is suboptimal >make the default ui look less AI generated (it will be perceived as faster and look better) >make catalog cards smaller like pic rel. I want multiple things on my screen. Everything is too big >Compact is great! Whitespace is evil >remove media metadata in browser before upload
>>1237 >>1238 We have a "Lite Mode" at the bottom right, I'm thinking of making it a proper lite version, a simplified version at some point. Right now I'm working on some changes behind the scenes to hopefully make the site faster.
> vichan is no longer maintained >4 chuds is getting washed away with ai generals, arbitrary bans are annoying, and mandating email verification is in effect for many users
>>1284 Thanks anon, I fixed the quote preview element, should be better now Now about the 2nd bug, I'm a bit confused, are you talking about the quick reply box?
>>1287 I was checking the Task Manager and the GPU usage spikes when scrolling up and down, when enabling Lite Mode(button in the footer) the GPU usage drops a lot. This weekend I'm gonna do some investigating, it's probably some stupid CSS effect most people don't even notice
>>266 Idea: user "wiki" pages Simple, user-edited pages like /int/ has for language resources, /g/ has for tech, art resources, etc. (but without having to use a separate site, ofc) It can help new people looking at the site to see that there are users already interested in certain topics, can create discussion points around developing the resources/guides and give the potential for more respectable shilling on other sites. It would be a big addition, but I think it also fits the theme of the site.
>>1452 That's an interesting idea, maybe a full blown wiki system would be too much, but places like reddit have a sidebar with important info. The question would be, who controls it? Users, janitors, mods? It's something to think about
>>1453 Maybe cram them in the sticky thread somehow. Like maybe the sticky thread is the "wiki" with an image and a short mini guide/informational text/code. I'm pretty sure Jay would want to deface the Jay page all the time so IMHO you should probably keep it locked and approve user edits on the weekend nights when you can vet the changes.
>>1453 Also, keep the sticky as the first page someone sees on the home page of the site. IMHO I think the /tech/ sticky image should be changed so it can relate to AV1/Webp. Showing users that this is allowed at first glance might be another form of "advertising" maybe.
Something like picrel perhaps and then surround that with various other stuff like bash scripting/C++ logos and whatnot.
>>1453 >>1454 The idea I have in my head is that each board could have a collection of "wikis" which are each just a tree of pages that should be kept short and to the point (like a general language learning page that has specific child pages containing resources for each language and is then attached to the General board). Adding the actual pages can go through a mod, but for edits I think it would be much more user-friendly and encourage engaging if normal accounts could edit said pages. Maybe only certain tiers can edit, you need jannie permission for your account before editing or just keep a log and ban anyone from editing pages for trolling. Just the standard markup you have and maybe limit the size to prevent someone from dumping his 4k waifu collection.
>>1455 >>1454 >>1456 Yes, I think a VIP User concept could be interesting. Trustworthy and knowledgeable individuals could be appointed to control these threads/wikis.
>>1457 Just don't give out too much control, we're all human in the end and capable of great evil with just an inch of power. Too bad Hiro is finding this out the hard way with grapeape.
>>1458 Yeah it'd start as a simple thing. I think a lot of normal users also hate the idea of a small group of people taking control of communities. For example everybody hates reddit mods because they're pretty much a mafia. I read somewhere that like 90% of the top 1000 subreddits are controlled by a couple dozen people.
>>1476 Cool, more than happy to help. I'll try my best and try to keep it concise and to the point. I like the idea of this being a tl;dr mini wiki that links to actual wikis.
Doesn't seem like there is any bot acitivty here. That's great.
On a recent post here, I got my first captcha checkbox challenge from CF. My personal opinion on CloudFlare is that it attracts more bots to their IPs so there's more botnets to swat away like flies. When I switched my site to use anubis instead, the number of bots making requests to my site was reduced drastically because most of them were filtered by anubis. With CloudFlare, even with some challenges, they still got through. I suspect this has to do with the notoriety of CloudFlare and Anubis being a relatively new anti-bot technology.
>>1611 Ohhh I see, the issue is how the content is loaded so a simple button that behaved like the End button wasn't working properly. I'll look into it again
>>1617 Oh, by the way, is this going to also apply to quotes? I notice that when I click on replies, there's a scroll animation. It's not instant either.
