I've seen a couple of posts where there is a reply to a post, with an arrow like it's a post from another thread, but I have no way of seeing those posts. As an example, please see >>>/technology/2102/, which replies to post 2101 which I cannot see.
Maybe those links won't work either, so here is a URL:
https://umigalaxy.com/explore/technology/1809
Anyway, I saw another one too somewhere. Are these special hidden posts for posters who have accounts or special privileges? Are they deleted posts? Do the posts exist and clicking the post number just doesn't work? In any case, it is frustrating to see replies to posts I expect to see but can't.
>>2299
Yeah that post 2101 was deleted because it was breaking the rules.
>Are these special hidden posts for posters who have accounts or special privileges? Are they deleted posts? Do the posts exist and clicking the post number just doesn't work? In any case, it is frustrating to see replies to posts I expect to see but can't.
No, they're just deleted posts. I agree with you that it's confusing so I'll do something about it

OK anon, whats your plan for getting more people here? Pic unrelated
Does umigalaxy work with kuroba for mobile users? Whats the angle? Only here to try to help with the AI board

>>2258
Probably too much work from the user side, I like what one anon mentioned about a reputation system.
I think getting more users to try umigalaxy is going to involve reaching out to other places where your ideas might resonate.
Making a pitch for the media database on twitter or bluesky are unfortunately the only other places I can think of right now.
4chan might of been somewhat worth it a few years ago but now it feels like myspace before everyone switched to facebook.

>>Stop converting literally everything to webp
I'm biased but I like this approach and void doesn't mess with uploads that are already Webp so no lossy to lossy webp occurs at least.
It could help users move on from JPG/GIF/PNG bloated images and help improve image quality/compression overall.

Shitty unoptimized garbage site
Discussion for the Codex page Meta Codex.
The Codex page is written by this board's curators, so other users cannot edit it. This thread is where everyone else talks about it: post a reply if you have a question, spotted something out of date, or want to suggest what to add.

Supporter Tier is Free Right Now! Just make an account and ask for it!
Check it out: Supporter Tier
I decided to make this thread so we can have a discussion about how Umi Galaxy is supported.
The idea behind the Supporter Tier is that, if the website grows, at some point we'll need to make some money to cover the server costs. And if it gets really huge, there will be even more costs beyond just the servers.
Right now, the servers are cheap and more than enough for the current traffic, so I'm taking this opportunity to give the Supporter Tier for free to people who register an account.
What do you think the Supporter Tier should have?
Right now, the Supporter Tier provides boosts for Clan and Alliance threads. Since everyone can create a Clan or Alliance, there needs to be something to prevent usage from getting out of control. We can't have an infinite number of threads with millions of media files without eventually paying for all that storage.
At the moment, Clan and Alliance threads have very little usage, so I was thinking about extending the Supporter Tier perks to regular threads on the normal imageboard as well.
What do you think? What kind of perks would you like to see in the Supporter Tier?

I've decided to make this thread to discuss what I've learned while trying to promote Umi Galaxy.
So far, I've noticed that visibility and clicks are important, but there's also a need to reach the right audience.
For example, yesterday I made a post on Reddit promoting the website on /r/webdev. The post got around 92k views and 200 likes, which translated into 200+ visitors to the website.
That looks pretty good, but none of those visitors actually engaged with the website in a meaningful way. Nobody posted on the imageboard, and nobody created an account.

All for a buttery smooth 2 second smooth scroll.
Not to mention the 200ms latency while typing this.

During a conversation with @webpgoy we cooked up an idea for an image tab in the settings. Right now all the static image options from our image processor sharp are available for testing.
I already noticed setting the effort to 6 increases the processing time by a ridiculous amount so maybe that should be capped to a lower value.
The idea right now is to test what makes sense, right now when you create a new preset it uses the default values so we can even double check if the default values make sense, for example a 800kb jpg is turning into a 1.5mb webp, which seems counterintuitive.
ps: animated webps and gifs are left alone, these settings don't apply to them

Heya. This is question for the admin of this site. What is your observability stack like?
>>2263
>Probably too much work from the user side
Yeah I suppose so, I was just wondering if there was anything I could do for the anons who wanna discuss a special topic without creating a full board for each of them, for example the 30+ anons
>I like what one anon mentioned about a reputation system
I implemented that one last week, but didn't want to make an announcement about it because these things are better off done quietly

I think there is some imageboard out there somewhere (possibly one of the Japanese ones) where OP can moderate his own thread, ban people, add decorations, and so on. Whenever anybody on 4chan asks for suggestions to improve the site, this is something I suggest regularly, because I think more visible moderation would definitely help 4chan. You are quite involved, of course, so "more visible moderation" isn't something that's needed here, or at least not yet.
The other thing I always suggest on 4chan is an April Fool's joke where random posters get given moderator powers. Think of the anarchy! They probably don't want to do that over there because it would be a lot of effort to create a whole new class of user that can moderate boards but still be banned by the real moderators, but if you are vibeslopping this whole site, you could set it up for next April and then we'd have an excuse to invite new users again
.

Try using it between two ||

Well, I was never really that happy with the previous version, I used shadcn components because they're easy to build with, but nowadays it's like every slop website uses it
>>1937
True, I got a lot of great feedback
>>1934
>btw, any details you can provide on your spam / not deterrence? I run a few of my own sites and use Anubis (with the mascot remo-ACK)
To be honest right now I don't have a lot of protection online, I even disabled Cloudflare's Turnstile. The website is so tiny that I don't see any reason to bother the users with these things.
also this feels snappier than 4cucks

Another altchan in the sea of altchans except void-san made a containment board for AI spam. The site used to run like dogshit but not anymore so I figured it was time to tell others about it.
My hope is that people that genuinely want to discuss tech here find this little bubble and we can all have a good time. At least it's more constructive than complaining on 4chan.

NP, I wish more sites had a lite mode setting.

>so I was thinking about extending the Supporter Tier perks to regular threads on the normal imageboard as well.
I think that would be better at least for the OP public post. Not sure if having a public thread filled with dozens of 20MB files is such a good idea. It could slow down the site with too many lurkers.
However the OP post getting more leeway in filesize would help boost thread quality, even with AV1 a larger filesize limit is always better anyways.
>if the website grows, at some point we'll need to make some money to cover the server costs. And if it gets really huge, there will be even more costs beyond just the servers.
host your own and the server costs never go up.
host your own and there are no other costs aside from a proxy.
>>1386
Thanks man, I'll have a fix for it next time I restart the website

>>1167
Yes, thank you, it runs well now.
I didn't realize how many blurs you had going on until I hit the toggle.
>>1192
You should look into SVG and animated SVG for non-interactive parts of your website. JS/react/whatever sometimes just spends way too much CPU for some website components.
Easier said than done however since you'd have to make differrnt versions for mobile/desktop and odd screen display ratios.

@void I made a little DISTS preview before going to bed
I calibrated DISTS to match -quality 90 4:4:4 JPG, which got me a score of around 0.03
Might be too high on high fidelity, idk. What do you think though, do all these JPG/Webp/JXL images look pretty high quality compared to the in.png one? Because if so jpeg xl not looking too hot, it really struggles with anime it seems. Haven't tested AVIF yet though.

>>902
In my current testing the latest libavif v1.4.2 is outperforming JXL outside of Anime, sometimes it's like 5-10% better at photographic content at 9.5 CVVDP despite using 4:2:0, which IMHO is nuts because JXL was supposed to be state of the art for high fidelity photographic content.
Anyway yeah, even if you risk a security disaster, it's uncertain when AVIF decoding will become tolerable enough at high resolutions. If you do end up adding support for it in 2027 I would highly consider some kind of resolution upload limit for AVIF tbh.
https://desuarchive.org/g/thread/107888656/#107892763
Also to be fair to JXL, picrel is from an old 4chan thread. I've heard a lot of work has been done to improve JXL decoding with a rust implementation. Though it's not clear if it's enough to match AVIF decoding performance. I have absolutely no idea how to test this on a phone though.
https://github.com/libjxl/jxl-rs
>>929
What you mentioned here is a big eye opener:
>AVIF might achieve acceptable decoding performance in like 2030 across 99% of devices but JPEG XL might have to wait until like 2040 for that though.
I think it'd be cool to support new tech like this, but we definitely need to wait a while

>>930
It could be sooner depending on how the dav1d improvements stack up but yeah at best 2027 might be the year of 8MP max AVIF images and that's if you ignore the risk of some RCE exploit being undiscovered like it was on webp...
Whatever happens I hope JXL won't go down without a fight. If there's nothing to challenge AVIF I fear it could stagnate and push the widespread global adoption to 2040 or later. As much as I like/trust Webp, it's missing lots of cool stuff that AVIF has. Even worse websites will have no choice but to bend the knee and pay billions to get their hands on Iris-Webp if they want better photographic image compression.
