Hello anon, i use gentoo

>>1710 (OP)
Nah but I've been able to learn to to make and execute bash scripts on WSL, though this was done through a virtualized Ubuntu install not a gentoo one.
I'm currently using it to compare image codecs with CVVDP though I've had to call the windows CVVDP install as emulating it on WSL has been a pain.
I do hope one day I become skilled enough to run everything on the bare metal. I'd love to see what the performance of those ARM chromebooks is like for testing purposes.
Look, I tried to switch from Arch to Gentoo, but it's wasting my god damn time. I swear, it takes 8 hours to compile some random fucking package, and then it suddenly fails. Also why is the package manager written with Python? When I switched back from Gentoo to Arch, It felt like pacman was unbelievably fast.
I run Gentoo +OpenRC + Sway on all my machines. I used Arch for ~3 years before that, but I switched because pacman kind of sucks, and managing packages on arch got way too annoying. Now, I just run updates in the background like once per week. My desktop has an i5-10600k and 16GB ram, so updates are reasonably fast. Even on my shitty ThinkPad, they're not that bad. Gentoo is just comfy, man.

I am yet another Gentoo+OpenRC+Sway user here. Man needs nothing more than this in life.

JXL is now supported on Chrome and Firefox.
@void do you have future plans to add JXL support to your site?

Primary goal: Determine compression efficiency between image codecs using a CVVDP score.
Secondary goal: Investigate diminishing returns between Webp and JXL
Currently only works with this specific input file: in.png. Only tested in Ubuntu WSL.
Replace /mnt/c/Users/1337/AppData/Local/Programs/Python/Python313/Scripts/cvvdp.exe with your CVVDP location.
CVVDP SDR display model used: standard_fhd. Scores tested: ~9.0 and ~9.5
My subjective CVVDP interpretation is that ~9.0 = medium quality and ~9.5 = high quality
Use CVVDP with photographic images only as it does poorly with Anime ones.
The display I'm using is a 27 inch 1080p monitor (~82 PPI), viewing distance is ~20 inches.

They're around $80 starting out

I found a good SVT-AV1 fork for high quality Anime encodes and made a DRAG&DROP windows batch script for it that includes SSIMULACRA2 scoring.
I also compiled the fssimu2 project for windows otherwise you have to manually convert video frames to PNG and math out the average by hand.https://github.com/nekotrix/SVT-AV1-Essential/releases/tag/v4.0.1-Essential@echo off & setlocal set "input=%~1" & set "outbase=%~dpn1" & set "stfu=-hide_banner -loglevel fatal" set "av1base=--lookahead 32 --preset 4 --rc 1 --max-qp 60" set "psy=--ac-bias 0.5 --enable-dlf 3 --noise-adaptive-filtering 4" set "bt701=--color-primaries 1 --transfer-characteristics 1 --matrix-coefficients 1" echo Welcome to the mini Essential SVT-AV1 2 pass drag and drop encoder, SSIMULACRA2 included at the end :ASK set /p bitrate="Enter 2 pass kbps bitrate: " && set /a bitrate=bitrate 2>nul || goto ASK if %bitrate% LSS 1 (goto ASK) else if %bitrate% GTR 10000 goto ASK echo: ffmpeg %stfu% -i %input% -map 0:v:0 -pix_fmt yuv420p10le -f yuv4mpegpipe -strict -1 - | ^ SvtAv1EncApp-4.0.1-Essential-Windows_Optimized -i - %av1base% --tbr %bitrate% %psy% %bt701% --pass 1 -b temp1pass.ivf ffmpeg %stfu% -i %input% -map 0:v:0 -pix_fmt yuv420p10le -f yuv4mpegpipe -strict -1 - | ^ SvtAv1EncApp-4.0.1-Essential-Windows_Optimized -i - %av1base% --tbr %bitrate% %psy% %bt701% --pass 2 -b temp2pass.ivf ffmpeg %stfu% -i temp2pass.ivf -c:v copy -an -y "%outbase%_%bitrate%_kbps_2pass_essential-av1.webm" echo: && echo --- calculating SSIMULACRA2 score of "%outbase%_%bitrate%_kbps_2pass_essential-av1.webm" --- && echo: ffmpeg %stfu% -i %input% -pix_fmt yuv420p input.y4m && timeout /t 5 /nobreak ffmpeg %stfu% -i "%outbase%_%bitrate%_kbps_2pass_essential-av1.webm" -pix_fmt yuv420p output.y4m timeout /t 5 /nobreak && fssimu2 input.y4m output.y4m del temp1pass.ivf temp2pass.ivf svtav1_2pass.log input.y4m output.y4m && pause

There are some cracks forming on all this AI shit but it's hard to say if they'll amount to much in the next few years. As far as I can understand everyone is still high on FOMO gas despite the Leopold scandal.
https://www.newyorker.com/news/the-financial-page/what-does-the-humbling-of-leopold-aschenbrenner-mean-for-the-ai-bubble
Im starting to get blackpilled on the whole topic. yes there are cracks in the ai bubble or whatever, but they have always been there. yet it keeps getting worse. and despite all the slop, ai also offers incredible things.
too bad i didnt prioritize ram or a good motherboard back in 2021 when i bought my current pc. its perfectly fine for gaming and all, but i doubt i will be able to buy a new one for the same money anytime soon, or maybe ever again.

I try and I apologize to OP but dam it's so hard to justify support for JXL right now. I'm not alone either, Gianni Rosato came to the same conclusion especially when taking Iris-Webp into account.
If you do decide to add support anyway I'd at least wait until 2027 to see how much the rust JXL decoder improves.

It's a neat trick but it's just not enough for web usage IMHO.

I was looking into the availability and it's still quite low, I think we might need to let it mature a bit.
Since chrome now fully supports it, I think availability might increase rather "fast"

>>1977
Yeah it's all good anon
By the way if you go to the slop version of the thread at https://slop.umigalaxy.com/explore/technology/1949 you can use the Pin Reply option and pin a reply you make with the link to the fuze imageboard.
That way you can redirect other anons interested in JXL there in the meanwhile

I like the idea of an AIslop containment board and not having to see walls of racial slurs when discussing programming/general tech. I try to shill only when /g/ anons cry about the AIslop. However like other anon said, I should mention 8ch for max freedom of speech.

i updated my phone to android 15 and everything got worse. i feel like android has been dying a slow death since 10

>>1707
Thanks man, I'm planning on mirroring this to Kissu and Reddit soon now that this is usable. I daydream about a Powershell version of this but I'll worry about that next year lol.
Maybe a pro at bash on Kissu/Reddit can help me auto target a CVVDP score, I've read that you need to understand binary search for that and I'm cooked there.
I also made the decision to nerf AVIF and use speed 4 instead of 0. Partly because I feel bad for JXL getting slaughtered by it but mostly because speed 0 is incredibly slow, very few will ever use it.

>>1709
They're live. I didn't mention this place on reddit to avoid spooking them, I'll try that when I go through the 12 images and reach a conclusion on the winners and diminishing returns stuff.

I think I burned myself out last time by focusing on both the results and the flicker tests at the same time so I've decided to focus on the former first and then the latter.

Here's the windows .exe fssimu2, you're going to need all of those .dll inside when placing them in PATH btw, I don't know how to compile them together unfortunately.
All I did was modify build.zig/dependencies from the fssimu2 project files and generate a windows executable through MSYS2 and bundle all the .dll files it needs in a .zip.
However I can't guarantee how reliable/stable this thing will be since it's fssimu2 hasn't even hit version 1.0 yet. I also got a false positive on an A/V scan.

For those who don't know when AV1 was released it was only beating H.264 at low quality. As the SVT-AV1 project improved it also started beating H.264 at medium quality but until recently there wasn't much benefit going from H.264 to AV1 if your goal was high quality. So that's what the Essential fork is trying to fix. In the future we may even see a fork for transparent quality (ie literally can't tell source and AV1/H264 encode apart).
Measuring what we'd subjectively describe as high video quality has also been a guessing game until recently with the introduction of SSIMULACRA2. Before that we had PSNR/SSIM with very poor subjective opinion correlation, VMAF with okay-ish subjective opinion correlation. SSIMULACRA2 AFAIK currently offers a much stronger subjective opinion correlation though I'm not sure if it's the strongest (see IW-SSIM)
